Whale watching, glacier walking and sea canoeing are just some of the amazing activities planned on this ‘trip of a lifetime’ to Alaska. The 2 weeks will be crammed full of exciting and exhilarating activities that will leave you utterly amazed.
We will be hiking to glaciers and sampling some breathtaking scenery that Alaska has to offer.

Day 1 Fly UK to Anchorage
Day 2 Drive from Anchorage to town of McCarthy
We depart out hotel after breakfast stopping at the largest outdoor pursuits shop in Alaska to pick up those last minute items of kit, we then head north east along the scenic Glen Highway stopping for lunch at the Long Rifle Lodge over looking the 27 mile long Matanuska Glacier then onwards towards the Wrangell St Ellias National Park and the historic mining town of McCarthy which will be our base for the next 4 nights.
Day 3 Orientation and briefing day
After breakfast at the lodge the morning will be spent on safety and wildlife briefings followed by equipment checks, once completed we will set off to explore the local area stopping first at the historic mining town of McCarthy then along the side of the Kennecott glacier to the abandoned Kennicott copper mill were we will be meet by our guide who will take us through the history of this fascinating area. The approximately 7 mile walk will allow for boots and equipment to be tested before moving on to more strenuous activities later in the trip. We will visit the famous McCarthy Saloon Bar on our return before making our way back to the lodge for a well deserved meal.
Day 4 Kennicott Glacier Day
Today we spend the day learning about and exploring the Kennicott Glacier in the care of a local guide. After breakfast we walk to McCarthy and catch the shuttle bus to Kennicott where glacier guides will issue and fit the equipment required for our expedition on the ice. We will spend the morning and early afternoon exploring and learning about the fascinating Kennicott Glacier. We return to the lodge early evening.
Day 5 Bonanza Mine Trek
Full days walk to the Bonanza mine. We leave the lodge after breakfast and head into McCarthy were we catch the shuttle bus to Kennicott which will be the start of our days hike; we will climb approximately 3,800 ft during our 9 mile trek. Along the way we will have stunning views over the Kennicott Glacier and Chugach mountains. We return to the river lodge in the evening for our last night, pack kit and have a farewell meal.
Day 6 Travel McCarthy to Valdez
We depart McCarthy after breakfast and travel to the port town of Valdez which is situated between the Chugach Mountains and the Prince William Sound, on route we drive through the scenic Thompson Pass which has the largest recorded snow fall in Alaska. We arrive at our harbour side hotel late afternoon; the evening is free to explore the delights of Alaska’s only all year round fishing port.
Day 7 Free day in Valdez
Today you are free to choose from a selection of optional activities or just relax and explore the town.
Day 8 Travel from Valdez to Huck Hobbits Wilderness Retreat
We depart Valdez after breakfast driving North to Slana and our camp site at Huck Hobbits Wilderness retreat. We pitch tents for our first night under Canvas. Final preparations and checks for two day expedition in the remote and beautiful Mentasta Mountains.
Day 9 & 10 Hiking and Wilderness Camping
We spend the next two days hiking and camping in the wild and remote Mentasta Mountains. The route follows wild trails and riverbeds into the high mountains where we will camp underneath the stars. On the second day we will carry on trekking through the wilderness making our way back down to the trailhead and our transport which will take us back to Huck Hobbits Retreat.
Day 11 Canoeing on the Slana River, move to Tok
After breakfast at Huck Hobbits we drive east to the start point for our canoe trip down the Slana river, we will spend approximately four hours paddling with frequent stops to admire the scenery and wildlife. On completion of our canoe trip we drive to the frontier town of Tok (rhymes with smoke) where we stay overnight in a local hotel and sleep in a bed for the first time in three days. Tok is the boarder town between Alaska and the Yukon it is the trade center for the Athabascan Native villages of Northway, Tetlin, Tanacross, Mentasta, Eagle and Dot Lake. Local Native arts and crafts may be found in many of the gift shops.
Day 12 Travel to Anchorage
After breakfast at the hotel we make our way back along the scenic route to Anchorage and our final stop of the trip we spend the next two nights in the capital city.
Day 13 Free day in Anchorage
A day at leisure in Anchorage, the chance to do some last minute shopping and to explore the unique atmosphere of Alaska’s capital city. Anchorage is a unique destination located in one of the world's most spectacular settings
embraced by six mountain ranges and warmed by a maritime climate, Anchorage is alive year round with adventure, recreation, seasonal festivities, sporting events and more. Anchorage is a modern city surrounded by spectacular wildnerness with adventures just steps from the hotel.
During summer the days seem endless.
Day 14 Fly to UK
After last minute shopping and final farewells before we fly back to the UK.
Vietnam
On our trip of a lifetime we will explore the very best that North Vietnam has to offer from the teaming streets of Hanoi to the beautiful mountain region of Sapa and then to The World Heritage site Of Halong Bay with its thousands of Limestone Karsts formations rising up from the waters of the South China Sea.
Our Hanoi hotel is located in the centre of the Old Quarter with its vibrant street market, shops, bars and restaurants it is the ideal Hanoi location. We will have a full day and night to visit all the major attractions including the Temple Of Literature Vietnams first University, Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum and the Ethnology Museum where will learn about the many ethnic groups that we will meet on our travels.
We travel North to the Chinese border and the Old French Mountain Town of Sapa where we will be trekking along high mountain trails of the Huong Hoa Valley crossing over old suspension bridges and along beautiful rice paddies. We will visit villages of the Giay, Black Hamong and Red Dao ethnic groups that haven’t changed in hundreds of years; sharing their homes and eating their food as we enjoy the hospitality and culture of a typical Vietnamese Homestay.
We explore the stunning scenery of Halong Bay in our own floating hotel the “Aloha Junk” this is our base for Kayaking and boating amongst the Karsts formations visiting the caves, beaches and floating villages which dot the bay.
Our final destination is the luxurious Cat Ba Sunrise Resort with its private beach, pool and spa it’s a chance to relax and enjoy the largest island within Halong Bay.
Before heading back to Hanoi and or flight home.
