» Beginners Classes

Attending a BMF session is daunting to a lot of people and for this reason we have decided to organise another beginners class. This will be a class where everybody who is new to British Military Fitness or is maybe unsure about what we can offer can take part in a class. The beginners class will be taken by one of our lead instructors who has vast experience of training people who are new to BMF. You will still get the ‘BMF experience’ but the added bonus is that you will all be trying it for the first time and you will have a shared experience.

The class will take place at 6:30pm – 7:30pm at:

Monday 20th February 2012 at Clifton Downs, Bristol

Thursday 23rd February 2012 at Tredegar House, Newport

Monday 27th February 2012 at Pontcanna Fields, Cardiff

In the class you will be taken through a gentle warm up followed by a mini BMF class where you will be taught how to complete the basic exercises correctly. We will also take part in a mini-circuit with some games thrown in to show you how you can exercise and have fun simultaneously. You will finish with a cool down and stretches and then you will be able to ask the instructor any questions you may have about the normal classes. Remember that BMF caters for all fitness abilities and levels and classes are split to reflect this. To book your place just email us or call 02920 490837

» Why does a weak core affect running?

It is a mistake to think of running as just needing leg and cardiovascular training. Just because fast moving limbs are what catch our eye when we observe other runners doesn’t mean they are all that’s working. Would you assume the only things that make a car move are its wheels just because they’re the bits you can see spinning? For a car, there is an engine under the bonnet and a chassis/suspension system that ‘balances’ the car for optimum power delivery from engine to road and keeps the car from damaging itself from impact with the road by providing stability. When running, the human body has similar demands placed on it and the core is fundamental in providing the source of locomotion as well as stability and support. Our long legs have merely made us that much more efficient at moving, such that we can travel further over the ground for the same energy expenditure. This acticle was produced by one of our members.

» Indoor Classes for the Winter

We hope you have had a good summer training with British Military Fitness and have achieved your goals.
We are now entering the Autumn/Winter period and for those who haven't experienced this before these are exciting times.

Did you know?

In the cold weather your body needs to uses more calories to keep it's core temperature up which means you either lose weight or you can eat more.
In the low light your body needs to think faster about where you're putting your feet and balance, Proprioception. This will improve your balance and agility.
The wind will offer resistance to your running which will improve your cardiovascular fitness.
These are just a few tips and there are many other benefits to training outside in the Winter.
All of our instructors take part in training packages this time of year to ensure the weather doesn't effect your training. We also understand that there are members that do not like the inclement weather and for this reason, this year we will be introducing an indoor class once a week across Wales and Bristol. The indoor class will still have all the components of a regular BMF session but it will be inside. The indoor session will be FREE to existing members and they will run between November and March. If you would like to attend the indoor sessions you will need to book your place with the office on the week of the session. This can be done by phone (029 2049 0837) or email (helen@bmftraining.com) As this is a trial, there are limited spaces available due to space in facilities. You will have to book your space every week so everybody has the opportunity to attend. Spaces will be given on a first come, first served basis so book early to avoid disappointment. You will NOT be able to book block weeks.
The times and locations are as follows:

» 2011's Very Wet 3 Peak Challenge

The Welsh 3 Peak Challenge this year proved to be a battle of strength, determination and how good was your waterproof jacket!

We left Cardiff at 8pm on Friday 24th July with 24 intrepid explorers ready to embark on our annual event scaling the highest peaks in North, Mid and South Wales. Driving conditions on the way up were very harsh but spirits remained high in the buses. We got to the bottom of Snowdon at 2am and got a little rest before the start.
It was 3.30am and we were ready to tackle the first of our 3 peaks but the low cloud and poor visibility delayed our start by around 30 mins. We finally started our ascent at 4am (much to Nicola's dismay of not having her porridge and coffee) and we quickly realised that this was going to be an enjoyable but slightly wet day.
As dawn broke we were making good progress up the mountain but the visibility was very poor and you could only see the person in front of you. The weather continued to test our mental strength but in true BMF fashion we continued to laugh in the face of the harsh wind and rain.
Everyone worked extrememly hard on Snowdon and by 10am we'd got off the mountain, had a well deserved brew and bacon roll and were back in the minibus albeit very wet and on our way to Cadair Idris.

We thought after Snowdon that things could only get better. How wrong were we! The bad weather stepped it up a gear but so did we! We battled with sideways rain, 5 metre visibilty, howling winds but didn't stop until we reached the summit of Cadair Idris.
We should have been slightly tired by now but the motivation and humour of the group, coupled with our constant battle against the elements just made us smile (we could have just been delirious).

We had completed 2 of the 3 peaks and we were focused on getting to Brecon to conquor the final mountain so we were quickly back on the bus.
After a couple of hours on the bus we were just coming down the A470 and we could see clear skies and even sunshine over the mountains and we thought "At last, someone is on our side" A few of the team then decided to get their dry clothes on for the last mountain to finish in style.
We pulled into the car park and everyone got off the bus and were ready for the last leg. Then out of nowhere came the rain, fog and wind again. The mountains were really going to make us work for the 3 Peak Challenge this year!
Undetered by the rain we plodded up the mountain, spurred on by the thought of the BBQ that was waiting for us at the bottom prepared by our fantastic drivers. We reached the summit in good time and quickly made our way back down in time for some well deserved food and Charles' lovely bottle of red.

We would like to thank all who came this year, it really was a tough challenge and you all showed great determination throughout. We hope you all come back next year so you can hopefully take in some of the views that you missed this time.
